A day of firsts

I almost don't want to blog today. Ke-ola has a followup appointment with Pet Hospital tomorrow to recheck his lungs and blood work. I won't write about Ke-ola's health toady but I will relay what we find out tomorrow at his Pet Hospital visit. I don't want to jinx it! Paws Crossed!

Ke-ola saw his first squirrel at our house today. We have large pine trees in our front yard. They are teaming with wildlife. Today a the largest squirrel decided it could run from one tree to the other without consequence. He was mistaken. Ke-ola took one look at the squirrel and he it was on! Luckily the squirrel ran up the biggest tree and left Ke-ola barking at branches. It was quite an adrenaline rush for all of us.

Sky is laying outside but
is covered by grandma's chair.
Later I decided it was time to take down the sun-screens from the large slider to our backyard. Ke-ola usually barks at our other dogs and his hair goes up, so I thought it would be a good idea for them to see each other through the glass. It would give them an opportunity to get to know each other by site and hopefully ease their tensions. I'm so glad we did! The girls just stood in front of the window and looked at Ke-ola. Ke-ola didn't bark like he has in the past, he actually started to jump up and down trying to get them to play. It was so adorable! At one point Sky laid down right in front of the window and so did Ke-ola.

Beautiful boy!
Roland and I were so grateful to see the pups so much more relaxed with each other. We decided to try another first. We've been keeping the girls upstairs or in the backyard but haven't let them hangout downstairs. (Ke-ola's been very sick and we've needed to keep them apart. We also didn't want the girls disturbing him while he's recovering his health.) We set up a place for Sky and River in the dinning room downstairs and set up a doggy gate. I was cooking in the kitchen and Ke-ola was in the den. We could all see each other but the three dogs were separated by the kitchen and doggy gates. No one barked or growled today. They all eventually laid on their beds and fell asleep in their respective areas without incident. I know this may not sound like much of a breakthrough to some but for me it was monumental. I had to wipe the tears away as I sautéed the salmon. Three dogs that had been terrified of each other were starting to trust the pack.

Today was a day of firsts for me too. It was my first official day open for business since we brought Ke-ola home. I was in the process of setting up my online shop when I first saw Ke-ola's shelter video and the rest is "I Love Shelter Dogs Blog" history. I knew his health would require 24 hour care for the first few weeks so I put my online shop on hold and canceled all of my private clients and classes for the end of January and for all of February. I am very grateful to my kind and loving clients and students for being so understand and supportive throughout my journey with Ke-ola. I look forward to seeing you this month and thanking you each in person. I can't wait for you all to meet Ke-ola!

Wishing you and your pack peace today and everyday. Thank you for visiting.
