Our first rainy day together

Afterglow from playing
fetch with Papa for
over an hour.
The rains and winds were heavy throughout the day. This was our first rain storm with Ke-ola. Each new experience brings new understanding and new opportunities for growth. We discovered that Ke-ola doesn't care for the rain. Even with a sweater and jacket he plopped his butt down under the patio cover and wouldn't budge.

The fact that he didn't want to go outside in the rain didn't hamper his energy level or desire for play. It seemed he had even more energy today than usual. We call it the rainy day wiggles. Dogs are just like kids. Ask any teacher about the energy level of his/her students on a rainy day and they'll tell you it's through the roof. Teaching martial arts students for over 25 years we've learned to be patient and creative on days like this. We did the same with Ke-ola.

I heard the tapping sounds of doggy feet and body slides from upstairs. When I came down to investigate I found my husband teaching Ke-ola to play fetch. Roland spent over an hour playing fetch with Ke-ola in the den. It was so funny to see them both like little kids having fun on a rainy day together.

Yes, yes, yes, whatever you say,
just throw the ball!

Teaching Ke-ola that the rain
is not so scary.
Ke-ola ate well today and finished all of his meals. He took his meds and got through his treatments. He is getting so thick that he looks like the Incredible Hulk busting through his sweater. We decided to help Ke-ola learn to be comfortable in the rain. We set-up a pillow for him under the cover of our front patio and all came outside to hang out in the rain. He didn't seem to like it at first but when he saw that he was getting all of his humans' undivided attention he settled and began to enjoy himself.

Roland is out with him again tonight. He's taking advantage that the rains have stopped for the moment and giving Ke-ola some exercise. Roland loves his time with Ke-ola. He always looks for any excuse to spend time playing with him.

Wishing you and your pack peace today and everyday. Thank you for visiting.

Ke-ola got plenty of time outside

Silly boy :)
We had heavy rains all night but they cleared by midmorning and we took advantage of the sun. Ke-ola spent time in the sun all day. We brought him out every 30 minutes to hour and let him soak-up the rays. He had personality plus today. He made a game out of everything.

Ke-ola is a funny boy!
(Ke-ola is not partial to the rain and preferred not to go out in it. Luckily he also has a rain jacket that fits over his sweaters so he didn't need to brave the cold.)

He is doing better with his nebulizer treatments. He is still a wiggle bug but when we work together he settles down and does a good job getting through his treatment.

His ears are almost
completely healed.
Ke-ola had fun playing with his foster brother Kadante today. They spent time outside in the afternoon and Ke-ola entertained him with his "army crawl". They are like two peas in a pod.

Once Roland gets home tonight we'll give Ke-ola another treatment. He then likes to take Ke-ola out with his skateboard and they run and skate in the empty parking lot across the street. I think Roland looks forward to his play time more than Ke-ola.

Ke-ola's wounds are healing nicely. His ears are looking smooth and the chunks that were missing have now filled in. We are still working to help him regain his health but don't want to take for granted the positive steps in Ke-ola's journey.

Energy Healing with Wolves and Dogs

Energy Healing session with Ke-ola,
our very sick foster dog, at 3:30am
Apricot the wolf from the
Earthfire Institute
The benefits of energy work and meditation are not limited to the human animal. I have been working with canines in my private practice for years. I also work with my own dogs. I give them private Reiki/Cleansing sessions when they are sick or agitated. I also enjoy meditating in the sun with my dogs as a group. Reiki is the Japanese word for universal life force or energy. As the name implies this "force" or "energy" sustains all living things. When we learn to tap into this powerful yet subtle energy in ourselves we are able to sense it in the living things around us. For more information on Reiki please visit The Reiki Principals post at http://manakeepers.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-reiki-principles.html.

In this blog post I'm sharing a video of my dogs during Sun Meditations as well as a photo of a private healing sessions with my foster dog. I encourage you to take some time and try mediating with your dog. The connection you build is amazing and with an open mind and heart, you'll be surprised at what your pup will teach you.

River and Sky at the end of our 20 minute Sunday Sun Meditation.

Those of you that have been following my Facebook Page Mana Keepers' will remember seeing Apricot the Wolf's Energy Healing Video in 2011. I share it here again and also include her followup video. She seems to move freely and without pain now. It is remarkable at what can be accomplished when we reach below the surface of things to touch the essence of things.

Apricot the wolf's first energy healing sessions.

Apricot free of pain and paralysis!

Apricot the wolf lives at The Earthfire Institute. Earthfire Institute is a place to experience the profound connection between all life. Their 40-acre wildlife sanctuary, nestled in the Yellowstone-to-Yukon Wildlife Corridor, is a loving home to wild animals that can never be released into the wild, and a refuge for reflecting—in their company—on how to create a truly sustainable world.

Earthfire Institute is a heart-centered place that cares for many different species. Here is a list of their current animal inhabitants:
Bears: Huckleberry Bear Bear, Teton Totem, Major Bear, Humble Bumble.

Ke-ola and His Cone Head

The look on both of our faces
speaks volumes.
Sorry for missing yesterday's update. I had my hands full trying to get the canine nebulizing treatment technique down. I spent most of the day trying different ways to calm him and nebulize him by myself.  Ke-ola was a very good boy with me he just couldn't sit still and would pry open the plastic wrap, letting the nebulized treatment out of his cone bubble. It was a futile endeavor for a single person. It took me 30 minutes just to get the cone on and the plastic wrap sealed because he wouldn't sit still. I finally calmed him down and then turned the nebulizer on. At that point it was all over. Ke-ola went one way and the tubing went the other. The plastic wrap didn't stand a chance. By the third try, I decided to wait for my husband to get home from work and try again with two people.

Sitting still for papa.
We were finally able to keep Ke-ola still enough to receive his treatment last night. Ke-ola was a very patient boy as our setup took longer than the actual treatment. Between the two of us we were able to keep the plastic wrap sealed. He was happy to sit as long as Roland was giving him undivided attention.  When he was finished with his treatment, Roland took him outside to move his lungs. He coughed a bit but not much came out. This was his first at-home treatment. We are confident that as we become more proficient at giving him his treatments that they will become more effective for him.

Ke-ola had a good morning. He is still not eating as much as before but he is eating and taking his antibiotics. (He is also weighing 70 pounds now so he doesn't need as much food as before) His wounds are almost completely healed and he had no shaking last night or today.

Rain is coming to our area so I've been trying to get him in the sun as much as possible this morning. Cold and wet are not a good combination with pneumonia. But given that we are in a drought, we can't help but be grateful for the rain. Luckily Ke-ola has a great rain jacket that Kym and Phil gave him so we should be set for the upcoming weather.

I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Corrie from I.C.A.R.E. and her beautiful little girl yesterday. They kindly brought Ke-ola's nebulizer so we could start his treatments right away. It was an honor to meet these two beautiful souls in person and say thank you on Ke-ola's behalf.

Wishing you and your pack Peace, today and everyday. Thank you for visiting.

Ke-ola Visited The Veterinarian Today

Ke-ola's in heaven!

Ke-ola didn't touch his dinner last night and I couldn't get him to take his antibiotics. He looked more tiered than usual and shook before going to bed. This morning he still wasn't interested in his food or treats but did drink water. All he seems to want is affection right now. He does get bursts of energy and wants to play but he gets worn out quickly and needs to rest. I called Pet Hospital and Dr. Rossi wanted to see him this afternoon.

Two of Ke-ola's favorite angels
Robin and Liz. Love you guys!
He was seen and they ran a CBC. His blood work came back a bit better than two days ago. The antibiotics are working! Ke-ola didn't want to eat today or yesterday but he devoured the canned food at Pet Hospital. His weight also went up. He's at 70.5 pounds now. These are all good signs but due to his lung congestion we'll need to start using a nebulizer at home. Guido showed me how to administer his meds without treats and Robin and Liz helped me learn how to administer nebulizer treatments to a canine. I was relived that his health seems to be holding steady.  I am hopeful that with these added treatments he will finally be able to recover his health completely.

Ke-ola and Sun-day Meditation...Om

Ke-ola during sun meditation
Our Sunday Fun-day went to the dogs. Ke-ola loves being outside and so do our other pups. We'd hoped to have a united pack by now but with Ke-ola's health challenges we don't want to risk all the dogs getting sick. We devised a plan to give all our pups outdoor time and family time today.

We got the AM walks done and fed the dogs. Then it was time to play outside. I took the girls in the backyard and we played with the tennis ball. Roland took Ke-ola in the front yard and played fetch with Ke-ola's little red car. They all had a fun time and while the pups weren't physically playing together they could hear each other playing and stayed focused on their play.

Roland and I switched and I got to spend some quality time with Ke-ola and he spent time with River and Sky.

Handsome boy
Ke-ola is so sweet.
I was not expecting Ke-ola to relax but he surprised me today and we had a great sun meditation together. I sat and crossed my legs as he stood next to me. I asked him to lay down and he did. I was amazed. I extend my right hand and placed it over his heart and my left hand rested on his ribcage. I took a deep cleansing breath, relaxed my muscles and closed my eyes. Ke-ola didn't move, he was totally relaxed. We spent 10 wonderful minutes sitting in the sun breathing together. It was a very special moment for me. Dogs experience life in the moment, each breath is a refection of mindfulness. They are great teachers, if we'd only learn to listen.

Ke-ola's appetite wasn't what it usually is. He didn't finish his breakfast or lunch. I will try feeding him smaller portions tonight. I'm hoping that his appetite is a reflection that he is reaching his healthy weight. It is difficult to remember that he is not well yet. He looks and acts like a totally different dog than the one we brought home from the shelter. He still coughs when he over exerts himself and his bark is very horse. I'm hoping that with two more weeks of antibiotics, exercise, and steam he will have a clean bill of health on his next visit.

Ke-ola relaxing after our Sun-day meditation.

I love meditating with Sky and River and I'd love to include Ke-ola one day.

Ke-ola loves to go on walks with Kadante

Ke-ola went for a walk with his foster brother this morning. He loves to get out and about with Kadante. We want Ke-ola to learn about his surroundings and help him get some energy out. It can be challenging at times because we don't want to push him too much but at the same time want to help move his lungs. He seems to be breathing well when he gets back and doesn't pant much so I think we have a good pace for him now.

Ke-ola going for a walk with Kadante and Roland.

Ke-ola smiling after his walk.
I tried to do a sun meditation with him but he was not about to sit still today. I decided to roll the tennis ball to him. He seemed to like that much more. Ke-ola is doing very well with his basic commands of sit, wait, off, down. He also is doing very well with his crate training. He is a smart boy. He does need work with socialization and excitement but it is to be expected. This boy had to survive on the streets of Carson so it will take time for him to learn what life is like in suburbia.

Ke-ola is an active boy with a great deal of energy. You'd never know he was still so sick by looking at him. It is difficult for him right now because we still have him separated from the other dogs and he needs more excersise than one morning walk/run. Roland and Kadante are out with him at this moment with a new daily evening walk/run added. We hope that by giving him more activity and mild exercise it will help his health and his energy level.

Ke-ola in the afternoon sun resting
between tennis ball tosses.
When I look into his eyes I see a love for life. I see someone that knows he's been given a second chance to live the life he'd only dreamed of and he doesn't want to waist a minute of it. He only stops when you offer him a belly rub, ear rub or affection. He loves affection even more than he loves his food. That speaks volumes about his personality especially with the extreme hunger he has experienced.

Ke-ola is not out of the woods yet

Ke-ola has a crush on Dr. Rossi
and we don't blame him.
We love you Dr. Rossi!
Ke-ola had his recheck appointment at Pet Hospital in Orange today. They checked his blood and x-rayed his lungs. We were all disappointed to find out that his lungs are not cleared yet and that his white blood count is even more elevated. We will keep giving him antibiotics and will check him again in 10 days.
Ke-ola today vs Ke-ola 1st visit
We had hoped that his insides were reflecting his outsides. He looks like a different dog. His weight is almost normal and we've gotten ride of his dry flakey skin. His fur is starting to grow back and it's much softer. His wounds are almost healed and he has energy for days. We so hoped these were indicators that he would be done with his health challenges but alas it was not to be.

Ke-ola has a little belly! YAY!
It is difficult to hear that Ke-ola is not out of the woods yet. But we have faith that working together with Pet Hospital and I.C.A.R.E we hope to help him find his way back to health.

For our part, I will begin giving him daily Reiki/Cleansing session again. I had stopped doing sessions with him when I saw his energy level was high. The last thing I thought our boy needed was more energy. But with the medical test results today I feel it is a must. My husband agreed and will help me with his sessions. Roland will start running him every morning to help his lungs move as much as possible and release some of his energy. Once they are done with their morning exercise I will session with Ke-ola outside. I know after a good run Ke-ola will love lounging in the sun, making our sessions possible and enjoyable again.

The sun is a wonderful way to meditate with your dog. I began mediating with my two girls Sky and River the first day we adopted them. They were both very sick as well and it helped them in their recovery. Once they were better we continued the practice. Now it is as much for me as it is for them. There are few things that can help me find my center faster than meditating outdoors with my pups. Sky LOVES sun meditations and will sit with me throughout the entire mediation (30 min to and hour). River comes in and out. She likes to sit with us for 10 minutes and then takes off to chase falling leaves then comes back and lays down then takes off again.

Thank you for your well wishes, positive thoughts and prayers in the past. If you are so inspired we'd appreciate if you could keep Ke-ola in your thoughts and prayers tonight.

Ke-ola wants everyone to know that Pet Hospital is the best.
He feels so safe there that he can relax and go to sleep.

Ke-ola sends his love

Handsome Ke-ola!
Roland (foster papa) had too much fun with Ke-ola today. They spent time outside playing and practicing basic commands. But from what I see there's more play than anything else. I don't mind because Ke-ola brings the kid out in Roland. Ke-ola waves his magic tail and hops around and troubles seem to disappear. You'll understand my meaning when you watch the videos below.

Ke-ola says "I love you"
I was having a challenging morning today so Roland and Ke-ola decided to remind me of all that I have to be grateful for…namely that I am loved.

My heart melted when I received this picture of Ke-ola with a rose saying "I love you" on my phone. And I about fell over with laughter when I saw the video of Roland trying to get Ke-ola to sit still for the photo. They are hilarious when they are together. I am grateful for the silliness and play Ke-ola elicits from all of us. He really knows how to lighten the mood and brighten the day.
Ke-ola and Roland practicing "obedience training" this morning.

Ke-ola not cooperating with Roland for his picture.

Ke-ola had a flakey day

Ke-ola says, "I love you Kadante"!
Look at that smile!
Today was foster brother day. Kadante set time aside to hangout and play with Ke-ola. I'm sure I don't need to write too much as the pictures say it all. They had lots of fun together. Ke-ola loves ruff and tumble play and so does Kadante. He is a tricker, Hip Hop and Fire-knife dancer and martial artist. He's always flipping or jumping or spinning fire. Ke-ola's butt goes crazy the second he sees Kadante. They are like two "action jackson" peas in the preverbal pod. I think Kadante met his match…a match made in heaven.

He loves to play. He's all boy all day!
Ke-ola has been itching on his belly and on his back. I believe the itching on his side and back are mostly due to dry flaky skin. He was so emaciated when we got him that he had virtually nothing left in him to condition his skin. We've been giving him cod-liver oil and coconut oil with every meal.

Itchy flakes go away!
The oils, water and good nutrition are starting to pay off. His fur is become much softer and his skin is more supple. He still has lots of leftover flaky skin so I decided to give him a light brushing to help get rid of the flakes. I'm hoping it will help relive some of his itching. I was amazed at how long it took to get all the flakes off a pup with so little hair.

He loved his 20+ minute brushing and massage. He kept grunting and snorting with his eyes closed and a smile on his face. He is very trusting when he knows you. He let me roll him this way and that way to get all the flakes off without protest.

Ke-ola wants to thank one of his angles, Auntie Kym Cloughesy, for his awesome sweater. Our weather keeps going from hot to cold and while Ke-ola has more weight on him so he can regulate his body temperature much better now but he still has bald patches and his fur is thin. His sweater are a treasure. Best of all, his sweater keeps him from further scratching up his chest and tummy. Yay!

Wishing you and your pack Peace, today and everyday. Thank you for visiting.

Ke-ola loves fetch

Ke-ola is a good sitter!
Roland had such a good time taking Ke-ola out yesterday that he did it again today. They left early in the morning and spent over an hour just having fun together. While they were out the fog rolled in so Roland took the opportunity to run with Ke-ola and then do coupage. He said Ke-ola coughed a great deal and that lots of "stuff" came out. Running in the fog seems to yield much better results than sitting in a bathroom steam. Thank's for the help Mother Nature!

Ke-ola and my Dr. Seuss socks.
Roland practiced basic commands again. Ke-ola is doing very well. He really wants to please his humans. He's a very good boy because his personality is very energetic and playful yet once he knows a behavior is not okay with us, he does all he can to correct himself.

Today he had a lot of foster mommy and daddy time, together and individually. We discovered that Ke-ola LOVES to play fetch. He's so funny, after he gets the ball in his mouth he shakes his head then proudly prances back. I'm teaching him "drop it". He is starting to understand the command because he loosens his grip and lets me take the ball. This boy is all about having fun!

His nose hasn't dripped in several days! Hurray! He still has a cough when he exerts himself but we are woking to help get the last little bits of goo out and gone. His skin is still irritated and he's scratched some parts red. But between the medicated spray, the Benadryl, hypoallergenic laundry soap and rinsing the floor with water after we clean them, we are hoping we can help him feel better soon. He has an appointment for his recheck at Pet Hospital this Friday. We are hoping his lungs will be cleared and his skin less itchy by then.

Roland's so proud of Ke-ola, the good listener and sitter.

Spending some cuddle playtime with his foster mama today.

Sunday fun day with Foster Papa

Ke-ola loves his foster papa.
Ke-ola had a fun bonding day with his foster papa. They were up early and out the door. Roland took him to a large fenced field and let him play. Ke-ola had the time of his life. He ran and jumped and rolled. Roland was very touched because Ke-ola would run and play and then run back to him and ask for affection. Even though Ke-ola had run of the large field he preferred not to run too far away from Roland. They also took a light jog around the field. We're hoping play and exercise will help Ke-ola's lungs get stronger.

Ke-ola relaxing after his jog.
They came home and had some rest and bonding time before breakfast. I could hear Roland laughing at Ke-ola's antics from inside. Ke-ola brings out the playful boy in him. I had to call them in to give them their breakfast but neither seemed to mind once the food appeared.

Ke-ola is still itching but it looks like it's getting better. There is no mucus from his nose and his cough is almost gone. We still need to work on clearing his lungs to help clear the pneumonia but his prognosis is excellent.

Here's a clip of Ke-ola after his morning play and jogging session.

Here's a clip of Roland amusing himself with Ke-ola before breakfast. They are hilarious together!

Ke-ola and his day update

Handsome Ke-ola
Ke-ola's itching didn't let up today. We are using his new spray and giving him Benadryl. We're hoping he will get some relief soon. His cough is much better and adding the steam to the coupage helps it be more productive. His nose has been dry all day and his energy is through the roof. (In a good way)

We are spending more time outside, giving him a chance to get some of his play out. Roland drove up while we were out front today and Ke-ola's butt went wild when he saw him. He danced and spun until I asked him to sit. He happily complied and waited for Roland to come and greet him. We were so proud of him!

I had to laugh when I saw Ke-ola sprawl across the grass. He was having a ball. I had to get a little film.

It has been an itchy day

Ke-ola had an itchy day. He'd been scratching for a a couple of days but this morning I noticed that he had a rash on his neck, chest, abdomen and his groin. All he wanted to do outside was scratch himself on the wall. I called Pet Hospital and they set up an appointment to see him in the afternoon.

Ke-ola rolled on the grass for the first time today. It made me so happy to see him enjoying the outdoors like a healthy, happy doggy.

Waiting to see Dr. Rossi
Ke-ola loves Dr. Rossi and Liz
and so do we!
We had a great visit with Dr. Rossi at Pet Hospital. Ke-ola has gained almost 10 pounds! He is now 64.7 lbs. His chest looks much thicker and his ribs are almost invisible. His energy level is through the roof. He wanted to "meet" every dog in the waiting room. Sadly he gets overly enthusiastic so the other pups preferred to keep their distance.

Dr. Rossi thinks that Ke-ola has an allergic skin reaction so she gave us a topical spray and information about over the counter allergy medications. We're hoping it will clear up quickly. His lungs sounded better but we need to keep up with the antibiotics, bathroom steam and the coupage to help clear them completely. He has a follow up next week once he finishes this course of antibiotics to check his lungs more throughly. Paws crossed he'll be cleared and then he can have his neuter procedure.

One of Ke-ola's favorite people…Annie!

Happy Valentines Day! Wishing you and your pack Peace, today and everyday. Thank you for visiting.

I would like to thank my husband for spending our 25th anniversary together, patiently and kindly helping me take care of dogs. And thank you to my beautiful son's for cooking a wonderful Valentine Anniversary dinner for us. It wasn't what we had planned for today but it was a wonderful day all the same.
